BIO: Sandy Wiechman is the current coordinator of Wood County Safe Communities. The Safe Communities coalition is a grant-funded program through the Ohio Traffic Safety Office. It is a pass-through grant from NHTSA – the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and funding is based upon a 3-year average of fatalities. Bowling Green State University has served as the lead agency for the grant for the past 12 years.

Reduction of fatal crashes, education, and awareness is the primary goal of a Safe Communities Program. Under Sandy’s leadership, the Wood County Safe Communities Coalition has had many successes and accomplishments over the past 13 years.

Sandy, a native of Wood County, spends her free time volunteering and working in her yard. She currently lives in Bowling Green.

BIO: Angela Castillo is a registered nurse and the Injury Prevention Coordinator for The University of Toledo Health trauma program. In this role, she leads community education initiatives aimed at preventing injuries and promoting safety. She coordinates programs such as “Stop the Bleed,” which teaches bleeding control techniques to the public, and “Stepping On,” a fall prevention workshop for seniors. Ms. Castillo also offers “CarFit,” an educational program that helps older adults ensure their vehicles are properly adjusted for maximum safety and comfort. Additionally, she has conducted traffic safety discussions for community groups, focusing on concerns as individuals age. Through these efforts, Ms. Castillo is dedicated to enhancing community health and safety by providing valuable resources and education everywhere.

BIO: Scott Hayes directs Midwest strategic communications for PBF Energy, Inc., which includes external, community, media, and governmental relations. He has appeared on several national newscasts including “The Hill”, “Fox & Friends”, “Morning Joe”, and “America Reports” to promote sound energy policy. PBF Energy, is one of the largest independent petroleum refiners and suppliers of unbranded transportation fuels in the United States, with assets in California, Louisiana, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas and Delaware. Prior to his current role, Scott managed health, safety, environmental, homeland security, and government affairs for PBF’s Toledo, Ohio facility, which processes 170,000 barrels per day of crude oil, employs roughly one thousand employees and contractors, and contributes about $5.2 billion in direct and indirect economic output annually to the region. Prior to joining PBF Energy, Scott served as Vice President for A. A. Boos & Sons, Inc., a full service general contractor that serves the Midwest market. Scott has also worked for the State of Ohio, Division of Safety and Hygiene and Industrial Commission, as well as defense contractor Brush Wellman (currently Materion). Scott holds a Master of Science in Environmental Toxicology from the Medical College of Ohio, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health from Bowling Green State University. David spent six years in the United States Air Force, Security Police Squadron at RAF Lakenheath, England, and Offutt AFB Nebraska; twenty-three years with the Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) as a National Safety Examiner, fire chief and EMT; and five years with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as a Federal Investigator. He retired after thirty-four years of federal government service in May 2011. BIO: Toledo Refining Company’s Plant Protection Manager Kevin Kennedy has served the Toledo Refinery for 25 years. He was promoted to his current position in July 2016. He had previously held the position of Battalion Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, and Fire Fighter for the Toledo Refinery. Chief Kennedy is responsible for overall strategic leadership to ensure the department is well positioned to provide the best service to the facility, its employees, and citizens of the surrounding community. To accomplish this, the Chief leads 12 fulltime firefighters assigned to 4 battalions, and 37 volunteers. He has a special interest in emergency management, fire ground hydraulics/logistics, and fixed fire protection design and installation.

BIOS:The Central Ohio Regional Safety Manager for Kokosing Industrial. This role works in water/waste water, heavy industrial sites, private client builds and residential/commercial solar across Ohio and the Midwest. Scott was previously the Corporate Safety Manager for SSOE Group, an Architectural, Engineering, Design Build, Procurement and Construction Management firm and helps support over 1200 employees, in 22 offices and 4 countries. Scott was previously the Director of Safety and Training for the Associated General Contractors of Northwest Ohio and the National Electrical Contractors Association of Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio. In this role he supported over 150 construction companies and over 9,000 tradesman.

Scott has a Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering from Fairmont State University in Fairmont, West Virginia where he was born and raised. He has been involved in construction safety since 1993 starting with the Division of Safety and Hygiene Bureau of Workers Compensation. In 2019, Scott retired as a Lieutenant Firefighter with Ballville Township Fire Department and was an active volunteer fireman for 35 years. He was a member of the Northwest Ohio Urban Search and Rescue, Technical Rescue Team for Region 1, Ohio. He also has a strong Security background with extensive tactical trainings and was previously a Private Investigator and Security Officer for RSS. Scott is a Certified Construction Health and Safety Technician and proud member of the American Society of Safety Professionals.

BIO: With 37 years in the field, Mona Weiss is a well-rounded safety professional, answering her calling by starting college at age 12. : ) She holds a Bachelor of Science in Safety Engineering from Murray State University, the first university accredited by the ASSP. Prior to joining the BWC, she worked for 3 Forbes-rated companies across Ohio, Michigan and North Carolina. She also enjoyed work overseas, performing ergonomics research and also conducting Industrial Hygiene sampling for Finnish, Swedish and Soviet-based shipyards and manufacturers. She has now consulted for a countless variety of employers during her 32 year career with the Ohio BWC. Mona is utterly dedicated to helping employees be more safe and comfortable so that they can best enjoy their evenings with their families.

Mona was the Team Lead for the Ohio BWC’s Trenching Seminars from 2019-2023. She is a certified Audiometric Technician, a Certified Forklift Instructor, a federally authorized OSHA OUTREACH construction trainer, a published blogger, a mining safety trainer, and an Ohio BWC Learning Center instructor. She is a former EMT and EMT instructor, Ohio Fire Fighter and Dale Carnegie Graduate Instructor.

BIO: Julie has been an Ergonomics Consultant for the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation-Division of Safety & Hygiene since January 1999. She has been able to assist companies with reducing their number of musculoskeletal disorders through job evaluations, training and awareness and the development of an ergonomic process for the workforce. Her experience ranges from assembly and manufacturing to office and health care environments. She is also actively involved in the BWC Safety Grant program that provides employers with funds to purchase interventions that will reduce/eliminate injuries they have experienced in the past. Julie is an authorized OSHA General Industry instructor and has provided OSHA 10 and 30-hour training for numerous companies and their employees to enhance safety awareness.

Previous to working for the Division of Safety & Hygiene she was the Safety Coordinator at Brush Wellman in Elmore, Ohio for 7 years. Julie graduated in 1990 from the University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Chemistry.

Mona Weiss – Ohio BWC

BIO: With 37 years in the field, Mona Weiss is a well-rounded safety professional, answering her calling by starting college at age 12. : ) She holds a Bachelor of Science in Safety Engineering from Murray State University, the first university accredited by the ASSP. Prior to joining the BWC, she worked for 3 Forbes-rated companies across Ohio, Michigan and North Carolina. She also enjoyed work overseas, performing ergonomics research and also conducting Industrial Hygiene sampling for Finnish, Swedish and Soviet-based shipyards and manufacturers. She has now consulted for a countless variety of employers during her 32 year career with the Ohio BWC. Mona is utterly dedicated to helping employees be more safe and comfortable so that they can best enjoy their evenings with their families.

Mona was the Team Lead for the Ohio BWC’s Trenching Seminars from 2019-2023. She is a certified Audiometric Technician, a Certified Forklift Instructor, a federally authorized OSHA OUTREACH construction trainer, a published blogger, a mining safety trainer, and an Ohio BWC Learning Center instructor. She is a former EMT and EMT instructor, Ohio Fire Fighter and Dale Carnegie Graduate Instructor.

Classroom E: Julie Reynolds – Office Ergonomics

Julia Reynolds – Ohio BWC

BIO: Julie has been an Ergonomics Consultant for the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation-Division of Safety & Hygiene since January 1999. She has been able to assist companies with reducing their number of musculoskeletal disorders through job evaluations, training and awareness and the development of an ergonomic process for the workforce. Her experience ranges from assembly and manufacturing to office and health care environments. She is also actively involved in the BWC Safety Grant program that provides employers with funds to purchase interventions that will reduce/eliminate injuries they have experienced in the past. Julie is an authorized OSHA General Industry instructor and has provided OSHA 10 and 30-hour training for numerous companies and their employees to enhance safety awareness.

Previous to working for the Division of Safety & Hygiene she was the Safety Coordinator at Brush Wellman in Elmore, Ohio for 7 years. Julie graduated in 1990 from the University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Chemistry.

Presentation Outline: Concepts and application of Drone technology. The certification required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) / 107 UAS License, and federal, state, and local laws that govern the use of drones. The range of industries that use drone technology, the need for the technology, and the advantages of drone usage in various industries.

BIO: T. Michael Hostin was with the State of Ohio serving in the criminal justice field for 26 years and currently works with the Bureau of Workers Compensation as a Special Investigator where he has been for 16 years. He is a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist, Certified Occupational Safety Manager, and Certified 107 FAA Drone Operator. Currently, he’s the CEO of Blackhawk Drone Services, providing various types of drone services in Ohio.
